Define globalization, outsourcing, and virtual teams and describe how these trends are changing IT project management.

Three recent trends in IT Project Management are Globalization, Outsourcing and Virtual Teams.

Globalization is a term used to describe a world where everyone is connected.

Outsourcing is the process of acquiring goods or services from a source that is outside of the organization.

Virtual Teams are groups of individuals who work together regardless of their physical location. Technology such as instant messaging, video conferencing, web-based collaboration software and email is what makes this possible.

Each of these trends make IT Project Management more efficient and sometimes even cost-effective.

  1. It's interesting how the connotation of the word outsourcing has many people believing that it deals with shipping jobs overseas.

I would also say that these trends have a counter-trend where project managers are seeing the benefits of keeping staff members in-house. Virtual teams are great project members may not always be available due to no internet, technical issues with video conference software, or even language barriers.

  2. Outsourcing seems to still be a popular trend, although in some industries, offshoring is declining as companies start to re-evaluate the cost-effectiveness of working with teams that share the same culture and/or primary language.
